Good morning everyone! Today I'll be recapping the full story of Fred Durst's Rei figure, and how it's related to a lost media mystery.
Fred Durst, William Frederick Durst, what a guy. If any of you clicked on this thinking 'who?', he's the lead singer of Limp Bizkit, a nu metal band that was popular in the early 2000s. Popular enough to get a Jojo's stand named after it 👀. Really mostly known for their album Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, as well as the Woodstock 99' incident where during their performance of 'Break Stuff', fans started literally ripping the stage apart.
I'm not saying they're bad, but I wasn't really into them as a kid. I like nu metal, but I feel like Limp Bizkit songs don't have much replay value (I should revisit their music again sometime, probably.) I do own a couple of their CDs tho (shoutout mom)
Anyway, he's known for being a fan of anime, especially Evangelion. Like, seriously, he loves Rei. Even today, November 2025, he has Rei as his icons/layout on both Instagram and Twitter.
(joined twitter 2009, bro is ancient)
(also he used to have the twitter layout art as his icon as well, but changed it sometime in 2023/2024? possibly because the zoomed out art had an emphasis on her breasts, idk.)
In November 2010, he showed off a Rei figure on a livestream, one with a pretty low viewer turnout. He held these livestreams regularly, where he'd drink and make music, and in this one he started showing off his figure, with the exact context unknown (maybe someone asked about it or something). Specifically he was using Ustream.
The exact Rei figure is https://myfigurecollection.net/item/11115, I believe? And at this point it seemed to only be one, with this being our first spotting of her.
Someone roasting her is crazy, lol
This screenshot went viral, with thousands of people saying 'he just like me', and plenty of memes, mostly along the lines of 'Fred Durst offers you a Rei in these trying times, do you accept'?
The exact stream where he did this also seems to be lost media, adding to the interest.
We have one video on Youtube of him doing other stuff during that same night, wearing the same outfit, but that's as close as anybody's found so far.
Here's a Youtube video which mainly covers this event, and there's some good stuff in the comments.
After that, in 2012, she was spotted in a picture he posted on Twitter.
He didn't update us on her again until 2021, posting this on his Tiktok. This was the first time we'd seen her since one of his houses had burned down in 2018, so people were glad to see she was safe.
And again in 2023, on his Instagram story he posts this..
WAIT!! What's this?! Google, enhance!
Okay, interesting...
Hmm, yes...
That's right, this picture gives us a lot to think about. He's now got the OG Rei, a tinier version ( https://myfigurecollection.net/item/1108912 ), this standing not-Rei, as well as a figure of Kusanagi Motoko from Ghost In the Shell, which is https://myfigurecollection.net/item/25394, I think.
Anyway, from this, we can learn:
Probably(possibly) getting more into them recently, right? They've been exploding in popularity in the last 5 years. One unverifiable comment I read said he's shown a picture of his anime figure boxes somewhere as well? So Fred Durst, if you make a MFC account, post some cool pictures for us.
Also, this is a fun fact I just can't not include, he sings about his anime figures in the unreleased song 'Cowgirls From Hell'.
Specific details of this Rei figure may remain lost, like if she was a gift, if he knows that picture's become a meme, that kind of thing. But regardless, it is pretty funny to see. The amount of people asking 'Is this real?' speak for themselves, lol. Thank you for reading as usual!
it gets brought up when people talk about this, but yes, tony hawk was also sitting in front of an asuka figure during a gaming video. it's pretty funny and would be cool if both of them owned eva girl figures, and screenshots of it went viral, but it was not his, he was in somebody else's setup area. it's not as good of a story lol
