Hello everyone! It's only been a short bit since my last article, but...
I have come across something interesting, something that instantly turned my detective mode on! Have you heard of the 'Sanrio' character Loly before?
Let's start at the beginning.
Part 1: How did I first come across her?
Well, I was looking on tumblr for some decorations and stuff, cuz yknow, blinkies. I'm willing to bet a fair amount of people have seen this character through Tiktok or like, Youtube shorts, but I am #unc.
I ended up looking through someone's account who's posted a lot, username junabuggy (shoutout) And they had posted some Sanrio character blinkies in early 2025! [ Direct link ]
And I was like cute! Love Adorozaturomary! THEN I was like, pause. Who the heck is this!?
I'd bet good money that I know every 'big' Sanrio character, so I was immediately interested.
Now, before I go on, let me just say that there is a lot of misinformation about this character out there. Not only is she mistakenly attributed to Sanrio (She is not a Sanrio character), but many 'educational' videos about her do not cite sources or really anything. This is actually someone's original character, so let's learn about her! (No fault to anybody who has created things like the above blinkies, though, they're still super cute and cool.)
Really, the proper information about her isn't hard to find. She's neither Sanrio nor lost media, and there's not really a mystery to this either. Article over! Jk.
Part 2: Then who is she really?
Loly is a gothic lolita-themed rabbit character, from the Zoosick line of LINE themes. She seems to be one of those common gothic characters that likes to be alone but also is pleasant and thoughtful, that kind of thing. The earliest information I can find about her indicates she's from 2011.
Now, in response to being informed that she is not a Sanrio character, people have started claiming Zoosick is owned by or was purchased by Sanrio- this is false. Zoosick seems to be one of the many, many projects by the prolific artist Chom Chumkasian (The designer of Loly). I don't doubt that she's probably Sanrio-inspired. Chom Chumkasian seems to have a very wide skillset when it comes to art styles.

She did get a little bit of merch! There's a line of phonecases for the Iphone5, at least three plushies, and some other misc stuff.
Now, the information for the merchandise of her is more along the lines of what I'd consider lost media. I couldn't find any posts about release info, license info (I saw someone claiming to have bought stuff of her at Hot Topic back in the day), I couldn't even find any secondhand listings of her merchandise. Feel free to try to hunt that down if you want.
She's pretty cute though! At first I was like hm kinda too much pink for me but I'm liking her design more and more.
So what did we learn today folks? That misinformation is dangerous, never trust the internet. I do think it's a little funny to see so many people say she's their favorite Sanrio character, and ask for her to be put on the popularity polls, though. Looks like the Zoosick project was still active as of 2021, getting into the NFT space and creating more stuff there. The artist Chom Chumkasian is still active currently, so if you like his work, maybe check him out! Here's his Instagram.
